A surprisingly heavy snowfall has covered Holland with a pack of snow. Contrary to the tradition, the snow didn’t immediately disappear but stayed for a few days running.

There’s no wintersport this year because of the pandemic. But nothing is impossible for a creative mind!

Aikido seminar in Nijmegen

It was my very first visit to the Dutch city of Nijmegen, which is located near the German border.

The reason for my going there was a joint aikido seminar led by three senseis:

  • Tom Dijkman (6th dan aikido aikikai);
  • Jan Thesing (5th dan);
  • René Habraken (5th dan).

So I was brave enough to not get scared off by storm Ciara (but nonetheless happy to be back home before dark).

Learn Dutch ‣ Het-noun cheat sheet

One of the tricky things in Dutch is the mapping of a noun to one of the two grammatical genders:

  • Common, which is masculine and feminine combined. Such nouns are called de-woorden because they are prepended by the de definite article.
  • Neuter, nouns of which are het-woorden as you put the het article before them.

Picnic: online supermarket review

It’s an unusual review today: I’m writing about my experiences with the fastest-growing online supermarket chain in the Netherlands—Picnic—which has finally opened its virtual doors before me.

I’ve signed up for it a little more than a year ago and landed at the place 200+ on the waiting list at the moment.

Later I checked on the app several times but my number never changed so I forgot about it a while later.

Electronic visas for visiting St. Petersburg

As of 1 october 2019 a simplified procedure for obtaining a Russian visa has become available. The so-called e-visa allows for visiting Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad region.

Stunning aerial photos of Dutch greenhouses by Tom Hegen

Tom Hegen, a German award-winning photographer specialising in aerial photography, has made absolutely stunning night photos of the Netherlands.

They feature dazzling light patches of greenhouses against the pitch-black background, so bright that they are clearly visible from space.
